It really irks me when I think about how much people just don't care about anything anymore. Of course, people have been apathetic since the beginning of time, but the people of my generation are the worst, in my opinion. Just speaking from observations of the kids at my school, no one seems to care about anything except themselves. They don't question things, they just accept what the media/teachers/adults tell them without wondering if it agrees with their own ideas, morals, etc. They listen to music that degrades women, encourages drug use and the 'money over bitches' idea, and they think that's alright? People have no idea what is actually going on in the world, spend money as if we're not in a recession, and pretend that everything is perfect. They don't read books with substance, they're too busy reading books about sparkly vampires and pathetic girls (ohh, jab at Twilight, couldn't resist that). They don't watch TV shows that aren't about some pathetic loser trying to find a boyfriend, or some random rich person's oh-so-interesting life.
The best example I can think of is my friend whose brother is going to fight in Iraq. When she found out, she asked me 'why he was going to Iraq, what's going on over there?' I told her there was a war, and she asked if that was where the '9/11 guy was'. And the girl in my history class that thought Africa was a country.
And people say I'm weird when I tell them I actually watch the news and things on the the history channel, discovery channel, and animal planet. I could tell you all about Hitler or Iguanas, but I know nothing about all those reality shows and 'celebrities' that have done nothing to earn their fame. I could show you so much obscure, never-heard-of music, but I couldn't tell you what's on the radio or MTV. And apparently there's something wrong with that.
Maybe I'm being overcritical. But people are just too self-absorbed. They don't care about the world, because they're too preoccupied with texting people they'll turn around and trash talk as soon as they send the message. Being nice to people is overrated, it's much cooler to be cold and aloof. And it's cool to say you're all for women's rights, the environment, world peace, all those great causes. But to actually know something about them and get involved, and DO something? That's what kids with no lives do, you know, the ones who don't go to parties and don't have lots of friends they hate. It's not everyone, there are lots of people who DO care. But there are also too many who don't, and they're going to be the downfall of us all.
